|| liar, liar ||

JC walks in on Trace, furiously scribbling in black marker across a picture of Cameron, in the middle of giving her a sweeping moustache and stubble on her impossibly long legs. Trace starts in surprise, moving to cover the picture with the length of his forearm, but he hasn't counted on JC's quickness, and he watches as JC dangles the magazine between thumb and forefinger, mouth quirked. Fucking asshole, Trace thinks, pulse doing double-time in his throat. He hates that he feels like a kid caught cheating on a test, hates that it's JC who's caught him out.

"Fuck off," he says, dropping the marker like it's suddenly burning his fingers. "You always sneak around like that?"

JC's smile widens. "Only when there's something to be found." He flips the magazine upright, studying the page, then glances up at Trace. "She needs an eye-patch, dude. Maybe some scars, here-- and here, too." He's pointing to magazine-Cameron's forehead. "Y'think?"

Trace says nothing, because he's not sure what to say. Possibly JC's just being a fuckhead, bored and looking for an easy target. Trace might be many things, but he's not that. No fucking way. "Whatever," he says, finally, and flicks the marker across the table. JC's hand closes over it before it can roll to the floor.

"Like this," JC says, pulling up a chair, dropping the magazine on the table, uncapping the marker. "Right across that perfect face." A flick of his wrist and thin black lines appear across Cameron's smiling profile. Trace watches, smiling despite himself.

"Justin'll shit," he murmurs, and JC laughs at that, a genuine belly-laugh, head thrown back.

"I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't know for sure you were right," JC says, holding the pen out across the table to Trace. "And I'm done. You?"

Trace shrugs. "Whatever, man. I was just fucking about, y'know?"

"Sure," JC says, in that smarmy tone Trace has heard all-too often, but it doesn't match what's in his eyes. Not at all. "Me, too."

Later, Trace wonders if JC knows they were both lying. He thinks he probably does.
